Due to the imperatives of supplying populations with lower-cost animal proteins, the "Turkey" chain has undergone an undeniable development under the stimulus of public policies initiated at the end of the 1980s. But it is only from the year 2000, following the implementation of the agrifood chains modernization process, both within the framework of the "Plan National du Développement Agricole" (2000-2007) and the "Politique du renouveau de l'économie Agricole et Rurale" (2008-2014) that we will see the development and industrialization of the "turkey" chain under the leadership of private SMEs.
The development of this sector has also responded to the demand of expanding urban markets and has gone hand in hand with a change in the food consumption model underpinned by a change in lifestyle with a trend towards the development of out-of-home catering and female work.
However, despite this importance, the intensive turkey chain remains little known and no research work has been devoted to it, at least with regard to the available scientific literature.
This article fills this gap based on research carried out within INRAA with a view to understanding the productive structures of the "turkey" chain in Algeria, which has undergone radical transformations induced by profound socio-economic changes.
Unlike the "Gallus" sector, whose development was initiated and supported by the State during the 1980s, this article will attempt to highlight the weight of private companies in the development and structuring process of the "Turkey" Chain in Algeria.
